OUR “NATURE EXPLORATION” ACTIVITIES
Research shows that although the stresses of modern-day life can be extremely challenging, it can also provide opportunities for strengthening family bonds and growing together.
Families can explore three activities to achieve three main objectives for greater health and well-being.
1) Reduced stress / greater calm
2) Increased optimism
3) Strengthened family bonds and support networks
OUR THREE ACTIVITIES
1) Connection with nature
2) Practices for mind+body+spirit
3) Family bonding, social support and play
Families are given the opportunity to relax in nature and playfully explore each pathway.
CONNECTION WITH NATURE
1) WHY CONNECTION WITH NATURE?
Extensive research spanning four decades documents the benefits of spending time in nature including reductions in depression, anxiety and stress, as well as greater calm and optimism, and increased social connections.
Large benefits to mood and self-esteem can occur from even short visits in nature, with the greatest change observed in youth.
Just a weekly ‘dose’ of nature for as little as 30 minutes is linked to significant improvements to mental health and relationships.
PRACTICES FOR MIND+BODY+SPIRIT
2) BENEFITS OF MIND+BODY+SPIRIT PRACTICES
Mindfulness-based techniques including body movement, are wonderful practices for increasing strength, energy, calm and optimism.
Research has found that these practices can help to significantly reduce stress, anxiety and depression, as well as, improve mood and sleep quality.
FAMILY BONDING & SOCIAL SUPPORT
3) FAMILY BONDING, SOCIAL SUPPORT AND PLAY
Family bonding and social support are essential to coping with the stresses of modern-day life. Greater family bonds are significantly associated with better child health outcomes and can provide a sense of belonging, support, personal empowerment, improved coping abilities and a reduced sense of isolation.
That's why play is a big deal around here. Play offers a joyful way to build strong child-parent bonds and is integral to the development of healthy coping, self-expression and communication skills in children and youth.
TIME FOR REFLECTION
TIME TO REFLECT
Daily reflection encourages positive solutions to complex family issues and can help family members to better understand their own feelings and needs and the feelings and needs of others.
Through the process of reflection, new awareness, insights and ideas are discovered to foster long-term practices for nurturing family health, wholeness and joy.
OUR ACTIVITY OUTCOMES
We expect families to achieve:
1) Stronger family bonds and communication
2) Improved stress management and increased calm and connection
3) Greater optimism
4) Greater knowledge and skills for integrating health and wellbeing practices at home
5) Improved individual and family health, wholeness and joy
